Before downloading a new software such as iOS 26, it’s a good idea to back up your device to make sure you have a copy of your important information. Once your device is backed up, you can begin downloading iOS 26 with confidence.
Check Compatibility
You will only see software updates that are compatible with your current device and software version. If your iPhone is not updated to the most recent supported release, the option to install iOS 26 may not appear.

Update iPhone Manually
To check for and install iOS 26 manually, go to:
Settings > General > Software Update
Your screen will show the currently installed version of iOS and whether iOS 26 is available. When you download the latest version of iOS, your data and settings remain unchanged.
Update iPhone Automatically
To turn on automatic updates:
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates
- Turn on iOS Updates under both Automatically Download and Automatically Install
When iOS 26 becomes available, your iPhone will download and install the update while charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and you’ll receive a notification before installation begins.
To turn off automatic updates, return to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
