How do I know which model my iPhone is?

There are a few ways to find out which model iPhone you have.

If the iPhone turns on

Go to Settings > General > About > Model Name. This will tell you the exact iPhone model.

If the iPhone does NOT turn on

You can still identify the model using physical and visual features.

1. Check for model text on the back (older models)

Some older iPhones have small text on the back that includes a model number starting with A (for example: A1865). Newer iPhones removed this text, so this applies mainly to earlier generations.

2. Look inside the SIM Tray

Check for a SIM tray
Some iPhones have SIM trays, and some don’t.

iPhones WITH SIM trays— usually have the IMEI printed on the SIM tray itself. This usually applies to iPhones generation 6-13.
Carefully eject the SIM tray and look for a small printed number labeled IMEI. This number can help identify the model.

iPhones WITHOUT SIM trays— These are typically newer models that use eSIM only. This usually applies to iPhones 14 and above.
If there is no SIM tray, your iPhone is most likely an eSIM-only model.

3. Count the cameras on the back

Camera layout is one of the easiest visual identifiers:

Single rear camera

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone SE (2nd & 3rd Gen)
  • iPhone 7 / 8 / 11 (base models)

Dual rear cameras (stacked or diagonal)

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 12 / 13 (base models)
  • iPhone X / XS

Triple rear cameras (square camera bump)

  • iPhone 11 Pro / 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max

If your phone has three cameras, it is a Pro or Pro Max model.

4. Look at the back glass & frame style

These design cues can also help:

Glossy back glass + aluminum frame
Base iPhone models (11, 12, 13, 14, 15)

Matte back glass + stainless steel frame
Pro & Pro Max models

Home button on the front
iPhone SE / iPhone 6–8 series

Once you know which iPhone model you have, you’re one step closer to getting the correct repair quote, troubleshooting an issue, or choosing a compatible case or tempered glass protector.
